01Characterisation of livestock
Phenotypic and genomic characterisation of animals.
Main goal: Identify, describe and document observable traits and the underlying genetic diversity within and between animal populations.
The group focuses on research spanning the characterisation, conservation, sustainable utilisation and genetic improvement of African animal genetic resources.
Species studied across student projects:
01Phenotypic and genomic characterisation of animals.
Main goal: Identify, describe and document observable traits and the underlying genetic diversity within and between animal populations.
02Identification of genomic regions and candidate genes for economically important traits.
Main goal: Identify and characterise genes associated with economically and biologically important traits in animals.
03Machine learning, data mining, artificial intelligence and advanced statistical models in animal production.
Main goal: Estimate economically important traits such as egg weight, body weight, eggshell thickness, milk yield and related production traits. Accurate estimation of these traits is essential for improving productivity.
04Design and implementation of community-based livestock breeding programmes.
Main goal: Design and implement community-based breeding programmes that genetically improve local livestock in a sustainable manner while directly benefiting farming communities.
We welcome Honours, Masters and PhD students, self-motivated postdoctoral researchers, and partners in animal breeding, genetics, genomics, AI and sustainable livestock production.
